THEY'LL RING LIKE A BELL
They'll Ring Like a Bell is a tongue-in-cheek response to the cartoon/filmic trope in which a piano (or anvil), precariously elevated, falls to the ground, often atop an unwitting victim.
In this interactive installation, as a viewer passes by a printer, which is positioned at the top of a staircase, he/she triggers the printer to release a single sheet of paper with a black and white illustration of a piano, anvil, rock, or dumbbell. A falling sheet of paper, representing a heavy object, presents an absurd catastrophe.
They'll Ring Like a Bell materializes a nonsensical and tenuous logic, and juxtaposes the flat, animated object with real world physics. Beyond this poetic gag, the viewer is inspired to contemplate the seemingly innocent violence that permeates even the most basic level of popular culture.
